Getting Your Blankets, Quilts and Woollens Ready for Delhi Winter

Delhi turns cold in the second half of October, and everything that has spent the monsoon in a cupboard comes out at once. This guide is the four-week plan for doing that properly: what to air, what to send for cleaning, what can wait until March, and what it costs.

Freshly cleaned razai, blanket and woollen sweaters laid out on a bed for Delhi winter

Written by the ClanClean team, September 2026. Prices quoted are for our Laxmi Nagar outlet in East Delhi, after the standard 20% discount; Malviya Nagar and Sarvapriya Vihar publish their own lists. Prices may vary — please confirm the current rate with the outlet before booking.

The four-week plan, in short

  1. Week 1 — take everything out and air it. Blankets, quilts, sweaters, coats, shawls. A few hours in direct sun on a dry day, then inspect each piece for smell, stains, clumped filling and moth holes.
  2. Week 2 — send the bedding that failed inspection. Anything musty, stained or stored unwashed goes for cleaning now, before it is on a bed. Bedding cleaned before it was stored in March only needs airing.
  3. Week 3 — woollens, coats and shawls. By the kilo for everyday knits, by the piece for shawls, pashmina, coats and anything you would not risk in a machine.
  4. Week 4 — leather, suits and the wardrobe swap. Leather jackets cleaned and conditioned, suits pressed rather than cleaned unless they are soiled, summer clothes cleaned and packed away.

Why a Delhi cupboard is hard on winter things

Winter bedding and woollens spend seven or eight months packed away, and in Delhi those months include the monsoon. Humidity climbs from June to September, cupboards sweat, and anything folded tight in a plastic bag traps that moisture against the fibres. That is where the musty smell comes from, and in a bad year the grey-green spots of mould. The dry, dusty months on either side add fine dust that settles into the filling of a quilt and the pile of a blanket.

The other problem is invisible. Moths are not attracted to wool itself but to what is left on it: body oils, perspiration, a drop of food. A sweater that went into storage looking clean but unwashed is exactly what they are looking for, and by the time you see a hole the damage is done. This is why every care guide says the same thing: clean before storing, not just before using.

Blankets, quilts, razais and duvets

Bedding is the bulk of the job, and the part most homes get wrong, because a double blanket simply does not fit a home washing machine. Even when it does, the machine cannot dry it. A quilt that is dry on the outside and damp in the filling develops a musty smell within days and mould within weeks. Commercial cleaning exists for the drying as much as the washing.

What to check on each piece

  • Smell. Any mustiness after an afternoon in the sun means moisture got into the filling. Send it.
  • Yellow or brown patches. Old body oils and sweat that have set over the summer. These get harder to lift the longer they wait.
  • Clumped or shifted filling. Usually the result of an earlier home wash that did not dry through. A proper clean, matched to the filling, will usually redistribute it.
  • Small holes in woollen blankets. Moths. Clean the blanket, and clean everything else that shared the cupboard.
  • Nothing wrong at all. If it was cleaned in March and stored in a cotton bag, an airing is all it needs. Do not pay to clean what is already clean.

Which bedding needs which treatment

Mink and polyester blankets, woollen blankets, cotton-filled razais, fibre-filled quilts and feather duvets each need a different cycle and, above all, a different drying time. Tell us what the filling is when you book, or let the rider note it at pickup. Bulky bedding takes longer than garments because of the drying stage, and the return date is confirmed with you at pickup.

Sweaters, shawls and pashmina

Wool is damaged by two things: heat and agitation. Both are exactly what a normal warm cycle in a home machine provides, which is why almost all shrinking and felting happens in the very first careless wash. Once wool has felted it does not come back.

By the kilo or by the piece

Everyday knits — sweaters, cardigans, sweatshirts, thermals — are cleaned by weight on a dedicated cold, low-agitation woollen cycle and dried flat, so a sweater comes back the size it went in. Shawls, stoles, pashmina and anything with beading or embroidery are cleaned by the piece, and pashmina by hand. De-pilling is part of the service at no extra charge, which makes a good sweater look considerably better even if it cannot make a worn-through one new.

Woollens Laxmi Nagar price
Woollen laundry, by the kilo ₹220 per kg
Sweater, full sleeve / half sleeve ₹250 / ₹200
Sweatshirt ₹175
Shawl / pashmina ₹300 / ₹600
Woollen long coat ₹300

Per piece or per kg, after the standard 20% discount. See woolen cleaning for the full list. Woollens come back in 48 hours as standard.

How often to clean a sweater: far less than a shirt. Airing a sweater overnight between wears does more good than washing it; clean it when it is actually soiled, a few times across the season, and always once before it goes back into storage.

Coats, suits and leather jackets

A wool coat or a suit that has hung in a wardrobe all summer usually needs a press, not a clean. Dry cleaning more often than two or three times a season wears the cloth and dulls the finish faster than wearing it does. At our Laxmi Nagar outlet a two-piece suit press is ₹110 against ₹335 for a full clean, and a coat or blazer clean is ₹225; the coat and suit page has the rest. Standard turnaround is 72 hours. Hang coats and suits on broad wooden hangers, never wire, and give a suit a day off between wears so the wool recovers its shape.

Leather is the one material that punishes guesswork. Water stiffens it, ordinary detergent strips the oils that keep it flexible, and heat shrinks it. A leather jacket that has spent the summer in a cupboard is best cleaned and conditioned once a year, and the conditioning is the step that matters: it puts back the oils that cleaning removes, which is the difference between a jacket that lasts another five years and one that cracks at the elbows. Leather is quoted per item after inspection; a jacket sent with a woollen order is typically ₹450. Allow 72 hours, because leather cannot be force-dried.

What it costs to get a household ready

A typical Delhi flat with two double beds sends two double blankets, one quilt and around five kilos of sweaters, thermals and shawls. At Laxmi Nagar rates that is ₹350 + ₹350 + ₹375 + ₹1,100 = ₹2,175 for the whole winter set, once a year, with free doorstep pickup and delivery because the order is well over the ₹500 threshold. Add a coat clean and a suit press and it is still under ₹2,600. If half the bedding passed inspection and only needs airing, it is proportionally less. For every other garment and household price, see the Delhi laundry and dry cleaning cost guide.

Storage that actually works in Delhi

  • Clean first, always. Moths want the body oils, not the wool. Clean bedding and woollens at the end of winter, in March, before they go away. It is the quieter time of year and the stains have not had a summer to set.
  • Cotton bags, not plastic. Sealed plastic traps residual moisture and grows mould through the monsoon. Breathable cotton bags or old pillow covers let the fibres breathe.
  • Fold knits, hang coats. A hanger drags a heavy sweater out of shape over months. Coats and suits go on broad hangers with a cotton cover.
  • Sun before storing, sun before using. A few hours of direct sunlight kills damp and freshens fibres. It is free and it works.
  • Pick the driest cupboard. Not the one against an outside wall, and not the one under the air conditioner drip. Neem leaves or cedar blocks help; naphthalene balls work but leave a smell that takes days to air out.
  • Check once mid-summer. Open the bags in July, look for damp or moths, and re-air if needed. Ten minutes then saves a blanket in October.

What is safe to do at home, and what is not

Bedsheets, pillow covers and cotton dohars are fine in a home machine, and a home machine on a wool or hand-wash cycle with cold water can handle a light sweater if you dry it flat and out of direct sun. Everything else on this page is safer sent out: double blankets and quilts because of the drying, razais because cotton filling clumps and takes days to dry through, pashmina and fine shawls because they need hand cleaning, and leather because it needs conditioning afterwards. The cost of getting it wrong is the item, not the cleaning fee.

Winter bedding and woollen care: your questions answered

Should I clean blankets before winter or after?

After, in March, before they go into storage — that is when body oils and dust are on them and when moths are a risk. Before winter, an airing in the sun is usually enough. Clean before use only if the blanket smells musty, has stains, or was stored unwashed.

How much does it cost to clean a blanket in Delhi?

At ClanClean’s Laxmi Nagar outlet a single blanket is ₹275 and a double ₹350 for one-ply, ₹325 and ₹450 for two-ply, after the standard 20% discount. Quilts are ₹375 single and ₹475 double. Prices may vary, so confirm the current rate with the outlet before booking.

Can I wash a razai or quilt in a home washing machine?

You can wash it, but most home machines cannot dry it. A quilt that is dry outside and damp in the filling develops a musty smell within days and mould within weeks, and cotton-filled razais clump. Commercial cleaning matches the cycle to the filling and dries it right through.

Why does my blanket smell musty after storage?

Moisture got into the filling during the monsoon, usually because it was stored in sealed plastic or a damp cupboard. Air it in direct sun for a few hours; if the smell remains, it needs cleaning. Store it in a breathable cotton bag next time.

How do I stop moths eating my sweaters?

Clean everything before storage. Moths are drawn to body oils, perspiration and food traces on the fibres, not to the wool itself, so a sweater stored unwashed is the target. Store folded in cotton bags in a dry cupboard, and check once mid-summer.

Will my sweater shrink when it is cleaned?

Not on a dedicated woollen cycle. Shrinking and felting are caused by heat and agitation, and almost all of it happens in home machines on a normal warm wash. ClanClean cleans woollens cold, with low agitation, and dries them flat.

How often should I wash a woollen sweater?

Only when it is soiled — a few times across a season is typical. Airing it overnight between wears does more good than washing. Always clean it once before storing it for summer.

Is it cheaper to clean woollens by the kilo or by the piece?

By the kilo for everyday knits: woollen laundry is ₹220 per kg at Laxmi Nagar, and a kilo is roughly two to three sweaters. Shawls, pashmina, coats and anything embroidered are cleaned by the piece because they need individual handling.

Does a suit need dry cleaning before winter?

Usually only a press. A two-piece suit press is ₹110 at Laxmi Nagar against ₹335 for a full clean. Dry clean it two or three times a season at most; more than that wears the cloth.

How long does blanket and woollen cleaning take?

Woollens come back in 48 hours as standard. Bulky bedding needs longer because of the drying stage, and the return date is confirmed at pickup. Coats, suits and leather take 72 hours. Express is available for most items at about twice the standard rate.
