How to Clean Curtains in Delhi: Wash at Home or Dry Clean, How Often and What It Costs

Curtains are the biggest piece of fabric in the house and the one that goes longest between cleans. In Delhi they filter road dust, cooking smoke and winter smog every day of the year. This guide covers which curtains are safe to wash at home and which are not, how to do it without shrinking them, how often they really need cleaning here, and what professional curtain dry cleaning costs.

The thirty-second version

  • Wash at home: unlined cotton, polyester and most sheers, in cold water, on a gentle cycle, dried on the rail. Nothing else.
  • Dry clean: anything lined, blackout, velvet, silk, linen, jacquard, pleated with a stiff heading, or too heavy for your machine when wet.
  • How often in Delhi: a shake or vacuum every fortnight, and a full clean once or twice a year — after the winter smog and again after the monsoon if the windows stay open.
  • Cost: curtain dry cleaning is priced per panel. At Laxmi Nagar a door curtain is ₹160 and a window curtain ₹180 without lining, ₹180 and ₹200 with lining, back in 72 hours.

First, read the curtain, not the internet

Almost every ruined curtain was washed by someone following general advice that did not apply to that fabric. Before anything else, find the care label, usually stitched into the side hem or the heading tape. If it says dry clean only, believe it: the maker knows what the lining and the stiffening are made of, and you do not. If there is no label, which is common with tailor-made curtains in Delhi, work it out from three questions.

  1. Is it lined? Hold it to the light. A second layer of fabric on the back means the face and the lining will shrink at different rates in water, and the curtain will never hang flat again.
  2. What is the heading? Eyelets and plain rod pockets survive washing. Pinch pleats, pencil pleats and anything with a stiff buckram band inside the top do not; the stiffening goes limp or cracks.
  3. How heavy is it wet? A full-length cotton panel can weigh four to five kilos soaked. Two of them overload a 7 kg domestic drum, so the middle of the panel is never really washed and the machine takes the strain.

Which curtains can be washed at home, and which cannot

Curtain type Wash at home? Why
Unlined cotton or poly-cotton Yes, cold and gentle Shrinks in warm water; expect 2–3% even in cold the first time
Polyester and synthetic blends Yes The most forgiving fabric; dries fast, barely creases
Sheers, nets and voiles Yes, in a mesh laundry bag Tear easily on the drum and on each other’s hooks
Linen No Shrinks and loses its body; creases become permanent
Lined curtains of any fabric No Face and lining shrink differently and pucker
Blackout and thermal curtains No The coating cracks, peels and sticks to itself when soaked and spun
Velvet and chenille No Water crushes and mats the pile; it does not recover
Silk, faux silk and jacquard No Water marks, colour bleed and loss of sheen
Pinch-pleat or buckram headings No The stiffening collapses and the pleats never sit right again
Embroidered, beaded or tasselled No Threads pull, beads crack and trims bleed colour

If a curtain is on the right side of that table, the method below will do the job. If it is on the wrong side, the honest advice is that one professional clean a year costs far less than replacing a set of tailor-made drapes.

How to wash curtains at home without ruining them

  1. Take the dust out first. Shake each panel outdoors, or run a vacuum with the soft brush attachment down both sides while it is still hanging. Delhi dust mixed with water becomes mud inside the weave, and that is what leaves grey streaks.
  2. Remove every hook, ring and weight. Metal hooks tear sheers and rust in the wash. Loosen the heading tape cords so the top lies flat.
  3. Test for colour. Dampen a hidden corner of the hem and press a white cloth on it for a minute. Any colour on the cloth means it goes to a dry cleaner, not the machine.
  4. Wash one or two panels at a time, in cold water, on the gentlest cycle, with half the usual amount of liquid detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener, slowest spin. Sheers go inside a mesh bag or a knotted pillowcase.
  5. Do not tumble dry and do not dry in direct sun. Heat is what shrinks curtains, and Delhi sun fades one side in a single afternoon.
  6. Hang them back on the rail while still damp. Their own weight pulls the creases out and brings the length back. Open the window, run the fan and put a towel on the floor underneath.
  7. Iron only if you must, on the reverse side, while slightly damp, at the setting for the most delicate fibre in the blend.

The two-inch rule. A curtain that finishes two inches above the floor or the sill looks wrong for ever, and no pressing brings it back. If the curtains are exactly the right length now and you are not certain of the fabric, do not experiment with water.

How often curtains need cleaning in Delhi

More often than the once-in-five-years most homes manage, and less often than cleaning companies suggest. What matters is where the window faces and what happens in the room.

Room or situation Light clean (shake or vacuum) Full clean
Living room on a main road Every fortnight Twice a year
Bedroom, windows mostly closed Monthly Once a year
Kitchen or dining area Every fortnight Every three to four months; grease holds dust
Children’s room, or anyone with asthma or a dust allergy Weekly Every four to six months
Home with pets or a smoker Weekly Every four to six months
Sheers behind a main curtain Monthly Every three to four months; they grey fastest
After painting, renovation or a Diwali deep clean — Once, straight afterwards

Two moments in the Delhi year are worth planning around. February to March, when the winter smog has cleared: curtains have spent three months absorbing the worst air of the year, and this is the clean that matters most for anyone with a breathing problem. And late September to October, after the monsoon and before Diwali: damp months leave a musty smell and sometimes mildew spots in the folds, and it is when most households want the house looking its best. Most people send curtains with their winter bedding at the same time; our winter blanket and woollen care guide covers that half. For this year’s dates, see our Diwali cleaning checklist.

Dust, smells, mildew and sun: the four Delhi problems

Grey dust lines along the folds

Airborne dust here binds with cooking oil and traffic film into something slightly sticky, which is why shaking stops working after a year or so. Vacuuming lifts the loose layer; only a proper clean removes the film. If the fold lines stay grey after a home wash, the dust has set and needs solvent.

Cooking and smoke smells

Smells live in the weave, not on the surface, so fabric sprays only cover them for a day. Airing in shade for an afternoon helps with light odours. Frying, tobacco and incense smoke usually need a full clean.

Mildew after the monsoon

Small black or grey specks near the hem or where the curtain touches a damp wall. Do not rub them dry; that spreads the spores. Brush them off outdoors, air the panel in indirect light, and have it cleaned. Mildew left for a season eats into cotton and leaves permanent marks. The same rules for damp wardrobes are in our seasonal storage guide.

Sun fade and rot

No clean reverses fading, and a west-facing window will rot an unlined curtain in a few summers. A lining, or a cheap sheer between the glass and the main curtain, is what saves it. Rotate matching panels between windows once a year so they fade evenly.

For individual spots — a chai splash, a child’s crayon, a greasy handprint at the leading edge — blot, never rub, and see the stain removal guide before reaching for anything stronger than cold water.

What curtain dry cleaning costs in Delhi

Item Dry cleaning, per panel Steam press only, per panel
Door curtain, without lining ₹160 ₹30
Window curtain, without lining ₹180 ₹40
Door curtain, with lining ₹180 ₹30
Window curtain, with lining ₹200 ₹40
Blinds ₹30 —

Laxmi Nagar outlet, per panel, after the standard 20% discount that applies to every order with no minimum. Standard turnaround is 72 hours. Unusually large, heavy or theatrical drapes are quoted before pickup. Every other household item is in our Delhi laundry and dry cleaning cost guide, which has a calculator.

Across Delhi, curtain dry cleaning generally runs from about ₹150 to ₹300 a panel, and the spread is explained by three things: whether the curtain is lined, how heavy the fabric is, and whether the price includes collection and pressing. Per-panel pricing is easier to check than per-kilo pricing, because you can count panels before anyone arrives and a wet-weight figure is impossible to verify. A typical two-bedroom flat has eight to twelve panels, so a full set is usually between about ₹1,300 and ₹2,400 at the rates above, which clears the ₹500 free pickup threshold several times over.

What a professional clean does differently

  • The dust comes out dry, first. Embedded dust is extracted before any liquid touches the fabric, so it is removed rather than turned into mud.
  • Solvent, not water. Dry cleaning does not swell the fibres, which is what protects the length, the lining and the pleat structure. The reasoning is the same as for tailored clothing and is explained in our dry clean vs wash guide.
  • Face and lining are treated as one piece, so they do not distort against each other.
  • Headings and pleats are pressed so the curtain falls properly when it goes back up, and panels are returned on hangers, not folded.
  • You do not carry anything. We collect from your home and deliver back; the cleaning itself is done at our outlet, not on site. If you would like help unhooking the panels, say so when you book.

The full process, fabric list and booking form are on the curtain cleaning service page. Carpets and rugs have their own method on the carpet cleaning page.

Keeping curtains cleaner for longer

  • Vacuum them where they hang, top to bottom with the soft brush, every fortnight. Five minutes a window, and it doubles the time between full cleans.
  • Dust the rail, pelmet and window grille first. Otherwise the first breeze puts it straight back on the clean fabric.
  • Keep mosquito mesh clean. A clogged mesh sheds dust onto the curtain every time the window opens.
  • Tie curtains back while cooking and when the windows are open on a high-pollution day.
  • Do not let hems sit on the floor where mopping water wicks up into them.
  • Take them down before painting or polishing, not after. Paint mist and polish fumes settle into fabric permanently.
  • Store spare sets clean, dry and rolled, not folded, in a cotton cover with a neem pouch. Fold lines in stored curtains can take months to drop.

Curtain cleaning: your questions answered

Can I wash curtains in the washing machine?

Only unlined cotton, polyester and sheer curtains, one or two panels at a time, in cold water on a gentle cycle with a slow spin. Remove all hooks first and hang them back on the rail while damp. Lined, blackout, velvet, silk, linen and pinch-pleat curtains should be dry cleaned, because water shrinks the layers at different rates.

How often should curtains be cleaned in Delhi?

Vacuum or shake them every fortnight and give them a full clean once or twice a year. Rooms on a main road, kitchens, homes with pets or smokers, and rooms used by anyone with asthma or a dust allergy need a full clean every four to six months. The best times are after the winter smog, in February or March, and after the monsoon, before Diwali.

How much does curtain dry cleaning cost in Delhi?

At ClanClean’s Laxmi Nagar outlet a door curtain is ₹160 and a window curtain ₹180 per panel without lining, or ₹180 and ₹200 with lining, after the standard 20% discount, with a 72-hour turnaround. Across Delhi the usual range is about ₹150 to ₹300 a panel. Prices may vary, so confirm the current rate with the outlet before booking.

Will my curtains shrink if I wash them?

Cotton and linen curtains shrink in warm water and in a tumble dryer, often by two inches or more on a full-length panel, and the loss is permanent. Cold water, a gentle cycle and drying on the rail reduce the risk for unlined cotton. Lined curtains should not be washed at all, because the face fabric and lining shrink by different amounts.

Can blackout curtains be washed?

No. The blackout layer is a coating or a bonded lining, and soaking and spinning makes it crack, peel or stick to itself. Vacuum blackout curtains with a soft brush and wipe marks with a barely damp cloth. For a full clean they should be dry cleaned, with the face fabric and lining treated as one piece.

How do I clean curtains without taking them down?

Vacuum both sides from top to bottom with the soft brush attachment, then go over them with a handheld garment steamer held a few inches away to freshen the fabric and drop light creases. This removes loose dust and mild odours. It does not remove the oily film that Delhi dust forms over time, which needs a full clean.

Do you clean curtains at home?

We collect curtains from your home and deliver them back, but the cleaning is done at our outlet, not on site. Proper curtain cleaning needs dust extraction, solvent cleaning and pressing equipment that cannot be brought to a flat. If you want help unhooking the panels, tell us when you book.

How long does curtain dry cleaning take?

72 hours as standard at ClanClean. Express service is available at about twice the standard rate and is confirmed before we collect. Booking a weekday morning pickup usually means the curtains are back before the weekend, so the room is not bare for long.

How do I get rid of mildew or a musty smell in curtains?

Brush dry mildew specks off outdoors, never indoors, then air the curtain in indirect light and have it cleaned soon. Do not rub the marks while dry and do not store the curtain damp. A musty smell after the monsoon means moisture has stayed in the folds, and airing alone rarely removes it completely.

Is it better to wash or dry clean sheer curtains?

Most polyester and cotton sheers can be washed at home in a mesh laundry bag, in cold water on a gentle cycle, and hung back up damp. Dry clean sheers that are silk, embroidered, very old or already brittle from the sun, because they tear easily when wet.
